Sourdough Naan



This recipe is a great way to use up some of your sourdough starter quickly. The naan is easy to make and doesn’t need too much resting time at all! Feel free to top yours with whatever you like… our favourite is the cheese and garlic one 🙂


  • 1/2 cup sourdough starter
  • 1/8 cup nonfat Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 cups white whole wheat flour (we used this brand)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter or oil
  • Toppings of choice



  1. Combine the wet ingredients together (starter, yogurt, milk)
  2. Add in dry ingredients (flour, salt and baking powder) to wet and stir till the dough forms
  3. Cover with a damp cloth and leave to rise in a warm place for 2-4 hours
  4. Flour bench top and knead the dough until smooth. Roll into four balls and then roll each ball into naan shapes
  5. Preheat a nonstick fry pan to medium-high heat and brush with water
  6. Place one naan at a time on the fry pan and cover loosely with a lid. Cook for 1 minute or until bubbles appear and a nice char starts. Flip and cook for a further 1 minute or until cooked through
  7. Repeat with remaining naans
  8. When you are ready to eat, preheat the grill and brush your naans with butter or oil and add whatever toppings you desire
  9. Cook under grill for 1-2 minutes (or until cheese is melted if cooking a cheese naan)
